Netty Simons is a virtually unknown 20th century composer I chanced upon while researching another project. Her open-ended graphic scores connect music with dance and theater, forcing both performers and audience into a more direct form of communication and experience.
Two of these scores, “Too Late, Bridge is Closed” and “Buckeye has Wings,” were performed with Leah Wilks at Black Mountain College as part of the 12th “Re-Happening” hosted by the Black Mountain College Museum. I hope to perform expanded versions of these pieces in the future as well as explore Simons’ work for solo violin.
