Mark Aguhar was a Filipinx-American artist whose work focused on the cognitive dissonance we feel when the various parts of our identities (whatever those are) don’t align seamlessly, as well as the recursive alienation of existing in a world that can’t or won’t see us the way we see ourselves. Blogging as CALLOUTQUEEN, she articulated a particular fractalization of identity and despair before her untimely death in 2012.
I have wanted to use her text “these are the axes” as a text score (essentially, the framework for an improvisation) for many years, and the “Intertidal: Beyond Binaries” edition of the Indigena poetry series was the perfect setting.
I’m looking forward to spending more time with Aguhar’s work!
